About the Position

Career Opportunity 

The City of Las Vegas, Parks & Recreation Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Makerspace Assistant (Sr Assistant).

The Makerspace Assistant is responsible for developing, implementing, supervising, and evaluating youth and daily activities in the Becker Technology Center’s design lab in a variety of STEAM based activities. The Makerspace Assistant may provide instruction and support for youth ages 4-18 interested in STEAM activities/programs including gaming, tinkering, 3D/2D printing, programming, building, art, design, robotics, and other activities. The Makerspace Assistant will be assigned to front desk to perform cashiering duties. The Makerspace Assistant will facilitate and supervise eSports activities.

This is an hourly level/ part-time position in the Sr Assistant series. This position is distinguished from other Sr Assistant positions by the assigned duties. Scheduled hours for this position are limited to 19 hours or less per week  (Shift will vary based on the needs of the programs and facility).  Hourly employees are also limited to 1,560 hours of work in any 18 month period.

Supervision Received

Receives general supervision from higher level supervisory or management staff.

The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current/future openings. 

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

  • Develop schedule, plan and implement STEAM, based activities and programs. 
  • Identify and utilize best practices for STEAM learning. 
  • Coordinates program services and cooperative learning activities for participants and visitors that are both fun and instructional. 
  • Supervises participants in the program area; ensures safety of participants, positive values, and ethical behavior through quality in programs and appearance of the unit at all times. 
  • Promotes and stimulates program participation. 
  • Tracks attendance and program activities. 
  • Work with volunteers 
  • Inventories all supplies necessary for program and submit requests for reordering. 
  • Maintains good order in program area. 
  • Maintains administrative reports and submit them in a timely manner. 
  • Establishes positive relationships/boundaries with youth, their parents and/or guardians. 
  • Maintain program areas clean, organized, safe for participants 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
  • In the area of eSports will assist participants in getting set up on consoles or computers, game updates, equipment handling, maintain room cleanliness, and overall game monitoring.
  • Answers phones; interacts and answers questions of customers at the front desk.
  • Registers customers for programs and services using registration software (may take payments and prepare deposits). 
  • Keeps front desk area clean and professional; hands out promotional materials to customers at the front desk.
  • Refers all disgruntled or upset customers immediately to full-time classified staff.
  • Communicates front desk supply needs to full-time or part-time classified staff.
  • Views facility for safety concerns and communicates them to full-time classified staff, prints Activity Role Sheet;

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • Formal and informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance
  • Basic computer skills is required
  • Cash handling experience desirable
  • Bilingual skills are desirable
  • First Aid/CPR and AED certifications preferred but not required
  • Strong understanding of STEAM activities, tinkering/building, and basic coding  
  • Ability to think outside the box and plan creative, fun learning activities 
  • Ability to motivate youth, and manage behavior problems in a positive manner 
  • Ability to work with youth, volunteers, co-workers, general public in a professional, courteous manner 
  • Ability to plan and implement quality age-appropriate programs for youth
  • Ability to organize and supervise participants in a safe environment
